The vast majority of us spend a whole lot of our time working. We need to work full time in order to afford the essentials that keep our days ticking over and provide us with a good quality of work. We need to be able to fund housing, energy, food and water, a vehicle or transport and the extras that make our lives enjoyable – going out, clothes, holidays, takeaways and more.
So, we will usually work nine to five jobs to do this. That’s eight hours a day, five days a week! If you’re going to spend this amount of time working, you really need to make sure that you’re doing something that will bring joy and happiness to your life. You don’t want to drag yourself out of bed dreading the day ahead most days.
You don’t want to spend all of that working time feeling miserable or down. It will just negatively impact your emotions and mental wellbeing. Instead, work really can be enjoyable! Here are just a few tips and tricks that can ensure you get the most out of your work as possible and that you are genuinely happy in your role!
Analyse Whether You’re Happy in Your Current Role
All too many of us simply end up in a job through chance. We apply for something through convenience, or because we already have training or experience in the field, and stick with it. We continue going and don’t think of leaving because the job provides us with financial stability and because staying put is more straightforward and less effort than changing your career path or applying and interviewing for new positions.
But this doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s the right job for you. Instead, take a look at whether you are really happy in your role. Consider how your job makes you feel. Decide whether you’re interested in your role. Do you do things that interest and intrigue you on your day to day process? Do you get on with your colleagues? Do you feel like you’re learning and progressing?
Is your job located in a convenient area where you don’t have to commute excessively? Can you see opportunities for progression? Is it paying enough? There are so many different factors that go into whether a job will make you happy or not. These listed ones are just a few to consider! If you find that your career isn’t making you happy, it’s time to consider a new role!
Consider What Job You Really Want to Do
Now, if you find that you enjoy the type of job you’re doing, but simply not the company you’re working for or the particular sector you’re working in, you can simply look for other similar roles elsewhere. Get onto jobs sites and find something more appropriate.
You’re in the lucky position where you can continue in your current role until you find something more appropriate. You are also likely to already have the necessary qualifications, training and experience in the role to secure an alternative position pretty easily. What may be a more difficult path is if you decide you want to head into an entirely different area of specialism altogether. It can definitely feel daunting heading down a completely new career path.
But if you have an idea in mind that you are set on, it’s worth it! Take a look at what qualifications you need and pursue them. This could be a degree, a masters degree, a PhD or a specific training course. If you don’t need qualifications, you may be able to start in a low down position and work your way up the ladder. The key here is research. Find out exactly what is needed for the role and go for it!
Make Sure Your Job Are Treating You Well
If you are happy in your current position and simply want to make work feel even better, or if you start a new role and want to make sure you’re as happy as possible within it, you need to make sure that your employers are treating you well. So many people like their role but feel that something unfair is happening, which tarnishes things a bit.
The good news is that there are plenty of employment laws in place to protect you and to make sure that you’re treated the way you should be in the workplace. If you are experiencing prejudice in the workplace, there are rules that protect you and your protected characteristics.
If you enjoy your work, but feel that health and safety rules are being broken, putting you at risk, you can ensure that health and safety laws are being implemented and acknowledged. If you do experience harm, a professional in Personal Injury Law will be able to fight your case and receive compensation on your behalf.
Seek Progression
Progression can make your role feel much more rewarding. If you feel you’ve hit a dead end or that you’ve become stagnant within your position in a company, you should ask to progress further. Discuss this with your manager or employer.
You might want a promotion or pay rise. The unfortunate news is that many employers will simply leave you to it if you feel content. They won’t usually want to pay you more than they already do. But simply asking can make all the difference! It makes your wants and needs clear.
The worst they can say is no! If you find that you are rejected, you can always look for more progressive opportunities elsewhere. Make sure that you are appreciated and that you know your worth and demand it!
These are just a few simple pieces of advice that can make sure you’re as happy as possible at work. It really is essential that you feel fulfilled and rewarded in your job. You spend way too much time working to dislike what you’re doing or to be in an environment where you’re not being appreciated or treated appropriately. Sure, stability is important. But your happiness is even more so!
