The home office is the new must-have room of the 2020s, thanks to recent changes that have seen working from home become even more ubiquitous than it was already on its way to being. However, making a home office can be expensive if you let it get that way. Here, we’re going to look at some of the tips you can take to outfit your workspace a little more affordably.
Go second-hand
Don’t be too precious with your furniture needs. More important than making sure the shade of your desk complements the colour of your walls is ensuring that you have a desk at all. Rather than buying new, you should look at all of the places where you can buy second-hand or refurbished office equipment. Of course, you should make sure that you only buy equipment that you’re able to take a look at and, if you buy online, get them from second-hand stores that allow for returns. Even if the equipment that you invest in looks like it would work a-okay, you need to get hands-on and have the time to see that it works as good as it looks. However, there are plenty of opportunities to find decent second-hand equipment so don’t worry too much about it.
Think outside the box
Aside from going the second-hand route, you might be able to get perfectly serviceable furniture and fixtures if you look outside of the traditional office supply shops. Schools, universities and libraries often use the same kinds of furniture, but without as much of a markup, so finding affordable classroom furniture can help you kit out your office just as effectively. You don’t need to spend all that money on an adjustable ergonomic seat if a good, back-supporting school seat will do the same job, after all. Of course, this can also help you kit out your office with organisation goods, such as whiteboards or corkboards as well, which can help you keep track of your ideas and goals.
Keep it paperless
Like many, you may associate office life with the shuffling of papers, keeping notes, and so on. However, if you’re able to keep your office paperless, then you can save plenty of money. Not only will you not need to refill your printer as often (it’s recommended you still have one for those moments where you need a physical document) but you will also save on filing cabinets and all of the paraphernalia that comes with them. You can also save space in your office, allowing for slightly larger furniture or some breathing room away from your desk. There are plenty of Cloud storage options that can allow you to securely keep all of your documents digitally so the need for paper
So long as you have a space to work comfortably and without distraction, that’s all that matters. Be willing to tolerate a little more in the way of drifting away from your aesthetic tastes for the sake of a good (and affordable) home office with the tips above. What’s most important is that you’re able to actually do your work there.
Be safe out there.
