A career in the military is not a job for everyone, but for those that do decide to follow a career path into the armed forces, there can be many rewards. If you have a stereotypical view in your mind about what a career in the military looks like, you may want to think again before dismissing it as a career that’s not right for you.
There are many different careers available in the military, and not all of them involve being on the front line. You may be surprised to know that while serving in the military you are able to study for a college degree at the same time, and still be an important part of the armed forces while doing a desk job.
More Than Just a Job
A military career is often more than just a job; it can be a way of life. You will probably not only work alongside your fellow recruits but live with them too if you are at a base. In most instances, you will have your food and board paid for you, which sets a career in the military apart from other vocations.
If you have a family, you will be housed within the base, and typically a whole community exists within the base, including schools, libraries, shops, and so on. This means that you will have everything you need ready and waiting for you, which is especially useful when you find yourself moving between bases regularly.
The housing that you are entitled to depend on your rank, but wherever you are housed, you will be living as part of a community that embodies much more than merely a job.
See the World
When you enlist in the armed services, you could find yourself traveling to destinations that you never thought you would visit. If you have a family and you need to move overseas, the military will pay your relocation costs. This allows both you and your family to see the world and experience life in other countries. Being able to see the world in this way is a unique opportunity that is not easily found in other careers, aside from the armed forces.
The opportunity for travel across the world is a big draw for many people that enlist in the services and is an appealing prospect for anyone that loves new experiences and meeting new people. The US armed forces have bases right across the world, so the opportunities for travel not just with the United States, but everyone are endless.
Learn New Skills
Due to the high number of different careers that are available in the armed forces, the learning opportunities are immense. Did you know that if you plan to go to college, the armed forces may be able to cover the costs? This means that you will still be earning money from working alongside your studies, but you won’t run up huge debts like many other college students.
A career in the military provides you with many transferable skills that are also extremely useful for civilian life beyond your military career. Leadership skills, decisiveness, ability to work under pressure, conflict resolution, and time management are just some of the transferable skills gained in the armed forces.
You will find that in the future, when seeking employment, you are equipped with the kinds of skills that employers are seeking from their applicants. If you planned to set up your own business, you would also find the skills and experience you have gained will be very useful indeed.
Undertaking training for a specific skilled role in the military such as a pilot, engineer, or mechanic, for example, will enable you to acquire specialized skills, which will always be in demand in the future.
A Sense of Pride
Members of the armed forces and veterans are held in high esteem; you only have to think of how respected the veterans that fought in World War I and World War II are to appreciate the high regard they are held in. Unfortunately, as time passes by, we start to lose more and more of these veterans as 80 years have now passed since the start of World War II.
You may be wondering How Many WW2 Veterans are Still Alive? As well as how we can preserve their memory for future generations. These kinds of questions illustrate how vital these veterans were in shaping both our past and future and the strong impact they made on the world.
Thank you for peoples who have the courage to go in the field to protect the human kind!
